Biography

Hailing from the burgeoning London folk scene that produced Noah and the Whale, Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling (for whom the lads started as a backing band for), Mumford & Sons' rootsy twang and acoustic authenticity has charmed the indie kids whilst winning begrudging nods from the folk purists. All active members and session players within the community, it was Marcus Mumford's early attempts at songwriting that focused the lads into a more formal band in 2007. Named Hottest Record in the World by Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, single Little Lion Man soon had the critics drooling as it became a surprise hit in Australia reaching Number 3 in their charts. Honing their rich harmonies and melancholic tales on barge tours of the Thames and island hopping gigs in the Scottish Highlands, debut album Sigh No More (2009) proved a big critical success, reaching Number 7 in the UK, topping the charts down under and winning a BRIT Award in 2011. The band had their status confirmed in 2013 when they won the Grammy for Best Album of the Year (for Glassnote) and the BRIT for Best British Group. Artist biography compiled by BDS/West 10.
